Quick answer

What is the UI/UX design internship at Icanio Tech School?

It is a mentored program where students learn to design digital products the way Icanio Technologies does. You study visual design and user research, build wireframes and information architecture, create interactive Figma prototypes and test them with users. The UI/UX design internship runs from 15 days to six months, offline or online, and ends with a certificate and portfolio case studies.

The role

What a UI/UX designer does, and why teams hire them

A UI/UX designer decides how a product looks, feels and works for the person using it. The job sits between users, business goals and developers.

UX, or user experience, is about the whole journey. Can a new user sign up without help? Can they find the price, finish a payment and come back later? UX designers answer these questions with research, flows and testing, not guesses.

UI, or user interface, is the visible layer. It covers layout, type, colour, spacing, icons and motion. A good interface makes the right action obvious and the wrong action hard. It also stays consistent across dozens of screens through a design system.

Every company that ships an app or website needs this skill. Startups, banks, hospitals and colleges all compete on how easy their products are to use. That is why a UI/UX design internship with real briefs is worth more than a list of tutorials. Recruiters want to see how you think, not only how your screens look.

At Icanio Technologies, designers work alongside developers on client products. Our UX design internship puts you inside that workflow, so you learn to justify decisions, write handoff notes and accept critique.

  • Research users before drawing a single screen
  • Turn findings into flows, wireframes and prototypes
  • Test with real people and fix what they struggle with
  • Hand off clean specs that developers can build from

Eligibility

Who can join the UI/UX design internship?

You do not need a design degree for our UI/UX design internship. You need curiosity about people and patience to iterate. These four groups do well in our UX design internship.

  • Systems thinkers

You enjoy untangling user journeys, grouping information sensibly and solving the small problems that make a product feel simple.

  • Career switchers

You work in another field and want hands-on practice in research, prototyping and problem solving before moving into design.

  • Creative students

You sketch, edit photos or make posters for college events, and want to turn that eye for detail into a product design career.

  • Aspiring UI/UX designers

You already know some Figma and want structured feedback, real research and usability testing to grow into a job-ready designer.

Interns learning UI/UX design with Icanio Tech School mentors

How feedback works

How design reviews work in our UX design internship

Most students have never had their design work critiqued by a professional. This is where the biggest jumps in skill happen.

Every week you share a Figma file with your mentor. They leave comments directly on frames, the same way designers review each other at Icanio Technologies. A comment might question a button label, a spacing choice or an assumption about the user.

You then reply, revise and explain your reasoning. The goal is not to please the mentor. The goal is to learn how to defend a decision with evidence from research or testing, and to change it when the evidence says so.

Twice in each phase you present your work in a short critique session with other interns. You learn to give feedback as well as take it. In our experience, this habit is what hiring managers notice first in a design interview.

By the end of the UI/UX design internship, you will have a record of your decisions and revisions. That record becomes the story inside each portfolio case study.

  • Weekly comments inside your Figma file
  • Critique sessions with fellow interns
  • Usability test notes you act on
  • A written decision log for each case study

Outcomes

What you will achieve in this UX design internship

You finish the UI/UX design internship with work you can show, not only a certificate. Each outcome below maps to real deliverables your mentor signs off.

  • 3 portfolio case studies

A mobile app redesign, a new web product and a capstone UX project. Each one shows research, wireframes, prototypes and what you learned from testing.

  • Figma at a team level

Auto Layout, components, variants, prototyping and developer handoff, used the way a professional design team uses them on shared files.

  • A research-driven process

Run user interviews, sort the findings and turn them into design decisions you can defend in a review or an interview.

  • Design system skills

Build and maintain a component library that keeps a multi-screen product consistent, and document it so developers can use it.

Portfolio

What a strong UI/UX portfolio case study includes

Recruiters skim portfolios in minutes. Our mentors help you shape each case study from the UX design internship so the key points are easy to find.

  • The problem, the user and the business goal, stated in two or three lines
  • Research you ran, with one or two quotes that changed your direction
  • User flows and wireframes that show how the idea took shape
  • Final screens, the prototype link and the design system parts you built
  • Usability test results and what you changed because of them
  • A short reflection on what you would do differently next time

The biggest lesson I took away was that good design isn't just about looking attractive; it's about understanding user needs and refining work through continuous feedback and iteration.

  • Ridley Paul Roshan, UI/UX Intern at Icanio Tech School

    Ridley Paul Roshan

Karunya Institute of Technology and Science

    UI/UX Intern

Hi, I'm Ridley Paul Roshan, and during my UI/UX internship I worked on designing user-friendly, visually appealing interfaces, conducting user research, building wireframes and prototypes in Figma, designing reusable UI components, and refining the user experience based on feedback. The most valuable lesson was that good design is about solving real user problems, not just looking attractive, and that the design process is inherently iterative, feedback, revision, and testing are all essential to a successful outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need design experience for the UX design internship?

No. Many interns start with no design background. Phase 1 covers visual design basics, typography, colour and Figma from the start. What helps most is curiosity about why people use products the way they do. If you already know Figma, your mentor will push you further with research and testing.

Is the UI/UX design internship only for CSE and IT students?

No. Students from any engineering branch, arts, science and commerce can apply. Design is about understanding people and solving problems, so a mechanical or B.Com student can do very well. Our team will talk through your background and suggest the right duration when you apply.

Which tools will I learn in the UX design internship?

Figma is the main tool, used for wireframes, components, prototypes and handoff. You also use FigJam and Miro for research and journey maps, Maze for usability testing, Notion for notes, Zeroheight for design system docs, Lottie for animation and Hotjar for heatmaps.

How long is the UI/UX design internship?

You choose from 15 days up to six months. A short internship covers design foundations and one small brief. Three and six month internships cover all four phases, the capstone project and the full set of portfolio case studies, which gives recruiters much more to review.

Will I work on real projects or only exercises?

In the UI/UX design internship, you work on product briefs drawn from real Icanio client scenarios. That means actual constraints: a target user, a business goal and developers who need clear specs. Your mentor reviews your files each week, the same way designs are reviewed inside our delivery teams.

Do I get a certificate after the UX design internship?

Yes. Every intern who completes the UX design internship receives an Icanio Tech School certificate stating the track and duration. More useful in interviews is your portfolio: up to three case studies that show your research, wireframes, prototypes and testing results.

Can I do the UI/UX design internship online?

Yes. You can attend offline at our centre in Tirunelveli, join online, or choose part-time weekday or weekend batches. Design work suits online mode well because reviews happen inside shared Figma files, but many students still prefer offline critique sessions.

What jobs follow a UX design internship?

Common entry roles are UI/UX designer, UI designer, UX researcher, product designer and interaction designer. Top performers from the UI/UX design internship are referred to the Icanio talent team. We also help every intern with resume review, portfolio feedback and mock design interviews.
